Red Arrow wildwood trail north of Townsend has some problems this season. It seems a spring has popped up in the middle of the trail at the top of a hill. I expected it to dry up by now but instead UTV traffic has made it worse. We were able to fill in the north side wide enough that an 80-year-old couple in a ranger came through so you should have no problem if you stay out of the sink hole. I will monitor it again before the weekend.

Red Arrow club members Derek, Rich and John were helping out Tuesday clearing ATV trails. This was the final clearing needed unless we get bad weather before opening day. Today we will be taking the club tractor to fill in washout which may take a few days. As of today, I have not heard when Oconto County is planning to open trails.

I got a chance to recon the ATV trail system Saturday with the club UTV. I was pleasantly surprised the trails had mostly 1-to-2-inch debris. Anything bigger, 6 trees I cleared or partially cleared as I ran low on the chainsaw batteries. Getting ready for the season opening will involve a small group of riders that will be doing 90% cleanup. Right now, most of the small branches are still stuck in the ice. We will not need the tractor and there is very little chainsaw work. There was still a lot of snow and ice on the trails depending on where I stopped, I had to use the winch to continue. I believe by next weekend we will be able to do some cleanup. We do have are annual meeting on Saturday and the weather looks to be wet this week. If all else fails, are trails are safe and ready to open and we can clean up at a later date.

Red Arrow trails turned icy this morning. Groomers were both out this morning but there is not much to work with. All trails north of Townsend are in good condition but corners are icy. South of Townsend the trails are weak but still rideable. It’s starting to look like the end. Enjoy this weekend.

Red Arrow trails are in good shape this week. We have enough snow to work with but none in the forecast. We have 1 day of warm weather coming on Friday. The grade along Hwy 32 is holding up well even with the sun getting higher in the sky. Trails going north and in the woods are in great shape.

Trails in the Townsend area received fresh snow last night. We still had a good base on the grade and snow in the woods so trails should be decent for the weekend. We will be out grooming tonight. In Oconto County only the red arrow trails will open 6pm Friday 2/20 check your maps and know where you are riding.

No new snow, and the weekend forecast in the low 40’s. Even without new snow the grade and other trails look respectable today. I would rate our trails in the Townsend area as good but thin. We are suspending grooming as of now until weather conditions get better. As of right now Oconto County plans to follow what Langlade County is doing. Trails will close temporarily Sunday Feb 15 at 6am. Pics are from the north end of Townsend.

Red Arrow trails are still looking good. There is a solid ice base with a few inches of snow on top. We are hoping to see more snow but trails right now are very good. Our trails in town of Doty, Saul Spring rd. and Eickoff rd. are very icy under the snow, careful on the turns. The weather this weekend looks like it will be warming up. There are a lot of events happening in the area this weekend so drive safe. If you get a chance stop out at intersection 641 and have a chocolate and a hot dog.

Wow it is cold here in Townsend. Red Arrow groomers went out Thursday and reported trails were flat snow covered and solid. We will not be grooming again till Monday morning due to the cold weather and lack of traffic. If you are going to ride this weekend, be prepared for the cold. Make stops at our business boosters to warm up.

Red Arrow groomers report trails are in very good condition this week. Snow cover is light but we have a great base. The trails have held up good since opening. Red Arrow trails are good enough to open anytime but unless the rest of the county sees some snow Red Arrow will also have to remain closed. Another snow day today but again nothing yet. I would sure like to see us open by the weekend. I have not addressed a grooming schedule as of yet, I'm trying not to jink the snowfalls. I will call around Friday to see who's available for the weekend if needed. If the trails are still closed, we can go out during the day. Pete and I trailered 5 miles north into Forest County and rode 150 miles yesterday of all groomed trails. If it wasn't for the warmup today, I would put a shout out to Forest County on Oconto County website.

April 11 2025 Brushing
Red Arrow club needs to get out and clean up UTV/ATV trails before opening in May. I’ve scouted some trails this last weekend. It’s mostly branches 3 to 5 inches in diameter and snapped off trees about the same diameters. We are planning an organized cleanup April 19. This is also our club annual meeting at 9 am at the town hall and Easter weekend. The board gives an annual report and elects officers during the meeting. It would be nice to see more club members attend. With that being said, Mike Ott plans to direct crews starting from the Red Arrow clubhouse on Hummingbird Hill Lane at 9 am. After the board meeting at 11:30 am I will meet with additional brushers at the clubhouse who wish to help that day.
Our fallback cleanup date will be Saturday the 26th. If you wish to get in an early ride and help out your club, please stop by the clubhouse at 9 am or 11:30 am on April 19 to sign in and get routes. The club does have pole saws and chainsaws for use but most of the help will involve dragging branches from the trails. Bring your own UTV/ATV or buddy up. Thanks.

Its 1am and both Red Arrow groomers just got off the trails. Due to the weather this was our last time out unless things change. For the snow we have, which is very thin the trails are good, Friday the trails will be good but the high sun and warm temps this weekend might make them go away quick in the open areas. It will still be nice for a family ride around town. I was fortunate to get my riding in the last 2 days 140 on Wednesday and 170 today both days leaving from Townsend and heading north.

I hope you have all had a fun riding the trails this summer. In hope of getting snow this winter we are heading out Brushing the snowmobile trails Saturday the 12th. It should be a beautiful day in the woods with the colors peaking. If you’re a club member without a UTV to ride there will be some extra space in other machines. We always need a hand removing debris from the trail. Meet at the clubhouse at 830 for sign in and we should be done by noon.

Dec 26 2022 Trail Report
Red Arrow Trails are as snowmobile safe as we can make them given the storm damage and are ready to be opened. At this time only Trail 7, the railroad grade, in Oconto County is open. We finished clearing on our southwestern trail system today. There was also a group that cleared Krake rd. We should be going out on our last clearing day Tuesday. Wow, I want to thank all the volunteers who have helped.
The only trail Red Arrow has left that hasn’t been cleared is the scenic overlook trail. This is only a 1.6-mile trail so it will be a short-day Tuesday. Meet at the clubhouse at 9 leave before 930.

Dec 25 2022 Trail Report
Merry Christmas everyone. Red Arrow went out Dec 24 and we were able to clear Saul Spring rd. We continue to work on getting the trails cleared to Animal’s Bear Trail bar on Hwy 64. We want these trails to be groomer passible and snowmobile safe before declaring them open. The ride south on Saul Spring rd. and east on Eickhoff rd. will not be the same as in the past as it will be more like 1 lane traffic with overhanging hazards. More like a normal snowmobile trail to be ridden with caution.
Trails needing work as of Today. Eickhoff rd., Perch Lake trail, Krake rd. and the Overlook trail. 90 percent of the work on these trails involves trees bent over of less than 6” diameter. Pole saw and chainsaw type work.
I would like to get at these remaining trails Monday and Tuesday. We will take 2 groomers to Eickhoff rd. We will have 1 open seat in each groomer with pole saws and chainsaws along. Any other help will need snowmobile transportation. It would be nice to have 8 people on this work. Krake rd. also needs branches cut back this is enough work for 3 people and would not require much time or special vehicles. We will be meeting at the Red Arrow clubhouse at 9am and leaving at 930. If you are in or need more information e-mail me at [email protected] or try to call me at 920-851-7752

Dec 23 2022 Trail Report
The storm of a generation has more or less fizzled out for us. We did receive more snow. The winds today do not seem to be as high as predicted. The temperatures are so cold it will be hard to get things done. Jim and Pete groomed the east side yesterday and dealt with trees down. On the West side we were able to punch through with the groomer to Animals, but it is rough and needs a lot of work yet.
I’m thinking if I can get another groomer driver, we would take both groomers to Saul spring rd. and Eickhoff rd. I possible have 2 people who would ride with us and we would start clearing. We will need the warming space and it is limited. I would also like to get at this area again Saturday.

Dec 21 2022 Trail Report
Red Arrow went out again and cleared the lower loop and the wildwood trails. The scenic overlook will still need clearing at a later date. We had another good group out I can’t tell you how encouraging it is to see new faces helping out. Thursday, I intend to put groomer crews together and groom out the fresh snow before the wind comes in Friday. Friday with the windstorm coming I intend to not go into the woods. Saturday morning, I will need to do some recon before sending people out, but we do have areas that need to be done and are easily accessible along Krake rd. and Foresthill rd. I have also checked with the town of Doty and if we want the trail open to Animals and south to Chute Pond trails, we will have to open up Eickhoff rd. ourselves. This is also a possibility for Saturday or early next week. I have to recon this again, but it may be several days’ worth of labor. A lot of this is dependent on the storm coming.

Dec 20 2022 Trail Report
2 groomers and crews went out today to see how the west side of 32 trails were. Trails were good from Olive pit to Forest hill rd. The small section along Forest hill rd. just north of Sawyer Lake rd. will still need clearing.
The first groomer turned right at intersection 510 onto Saul spring rd. with the intent to open trail to Animal’s Bear Trail Bar. The trail was good until Saul Spring rd. turned south. Saul spring rd. was barely passable. But we didn’t do any clearing. Eickhoff rd. was not passible. The work on these 2 town roads is looking to large for Red Arrow club and I am not sure we have the jurisdiction to clear them.
The second groomer and crew started at the BP and cleared to cathedral pines. From Phil’s we went south and cleared trails 16, 116 and part of trail 1. To follow these #s you need to be using the 2023 maps or online maps.
Wednesdays start time is 930 from the clubhouse on Hummingbird Lane. We will be clearing the lower loop and the overlook route. The second crew if we can field one will be making a needed second pass on the wildwood trail. With exception of the trails to Animal’s we have made great progress since the storm. We all owe the brushing crews a big thank you. I hope to get a chance to list them on a later post. Thanks people.

Dec 19 2022 Trail Report
As you all have heard by now, the storm that came through last Wednesday left a mess. Several calls to action went out and we have made good progress, but it's been tough. A few of us were going to recon Friday morning but ended up clearing the grade from the BP south. We then went northwest from the Olive Pit and barely made it to diamond roof rd. with minimal clearing. Saturday, we had 2 crews on the east side. Mike Ott supplied 2 crews on the west side. It was a long day for all Thanks. Sunday a groomer crew of 4 went out and cut through from intersection 641 to the airport and met up with the Paul Bunyan system. Another full day of work. Today Monday we passed on going out so people could recoup and catchup on home items.
We believe the west trails are now passible from the north end down to Phil's thanks to the 2 crews Mike Ott put together. The trails south of Phil's have not been touched but since they were logged recently, we are hopeful. Tuesday morning at 9am starting at the clubhouse we will start panning the west trails from the north going south. A few volunteers will be out ahead clearing. Some extra volunteers would help. I have 2 more yet to contact that expressed interest this week. I am hopeful we can make it to Animals on at least 1 of the routes.
Wednesday I will need help again. We will again be starting at the clubhouse at 9. I am not yet sure which sections we will look at. I will continue to put together clearing information as the week goes on. On the east side of 32 we still have the lower loop and the overlook trails to clear. The wildwood needs another pass as do most of the trails. We will be sending out 2 people per groomer until further notice. A call for help went out on our Red Arrow website and our Facebook for help and volunteers are starting to trickle in.

ATV/UTV’s on Oconto County roads will be permitted starting this year. They will be opened when all the spring changes have been done. mostly removing signs. Oconto county tourism Facebook page will post when this new law takes effect. I hope they will also post the county roads north of 22 only and the official speed limit will be the same as currently posted for the road traffic. A link to their Facebook page is posted below. Be safe out there especially when traveling the new road routes as cars and trucks will not be looking for you.

Trail Update
Conditions are the same as earlier in the week. North of town you can ride the grade, south of town it is down to all ice. Looks like no more clubs are grooming in the area. Look to take short trips and have lunch, a beverage and a conversation with other late season riders. Next week it will be over in this area. It won’t get much above freezing till Sunday but then things will open up fast. Trail Boss Mike
Trail Update
I took a ride yesterday to check out the trail system. 75 miles. The grade south of Townsend is almost all ice. Without a snowfall it will be hard to ride. All trails other than the grade were in good condition. Looks like the town of Doty plowed Saul Spring rd. but it is ridable just at a slower pace. Lily groomed their trails from rose lake rd. west and they were in very good condition. LMT is still grooming but I did not see the 100-miler trails groomed. We will go out tonight and do limited grooming. If we get a snowfall before the weekend you can look forward to taking some good short rides. Trail Boss Mike
Trail Update
There’s a light snow in Townsend this morning very pretty. I don’t believe it will be anywhere near what’s needed to refresh the trails. Trails actually held up to the rain Saturday it would only take an inch or two. I talked with some riders Sunday who rode over from Pickerel. They said the base was solid and had a good ride. Trails are still ridable but I could not get out across the lakes because of the amount of water mixed in the snow. It took a lot of horsepower to stay above the mush. Trail Boss Mike
Trail Update
Sorry we did not send the groomers out last night. If you’re daring enough to take a morning ride the grade has some big woops in it otherwise the trails are icy but good. Trail Update
Trails are looking good this morning after a busy Saturday the trails groomed out real nice. The groomers and I are seeing a big problem with riders missing curves and running off trails. Speed looks like it’s the main issue. Thursday a group found a rider who missed a turn on the north end of our trail system and laid in the woods overnight with broken arms. Ride safe out there for yourself and others. Trail Boss Mike

Took a ride Friday into Florance and the UP. Came back down the grade the whole length. By Friday night the grade was beat up like a late Saturday afternoon.
